Have you ever heard the phrase Comp-Off? If yes, then you pretty much have an idea of what this article is all about.

compensatory leave application is one of the most common leave applications for professionals. But the information about the same is scarce as each company has its policy regarding it.

So what are comp offs, and what is the meaning of compensatory leave? Read this blog to learn everything you need to know about compensatory leave applications.

Compensatory leave meaning

Famously called comp off, comp time, or comp leaves, this leave is one of a kind. While all the other leaves are accumulated over time, compensatory leaves are earned by working extra hours on holidays, days off, etc.

Compensatory leave, true to its name, is a leave awarded as compensation for working extra days/hours. It enables people to encash leaves when they want in exchange for the overtime they have earned by working on weekly off, holidays, etc.

How to apply for comp leaves?

Applying for compensatory leaves is similar to the process for other leaves. But in case you need more clarity, here is how you can apply for compensatory leaves:

1. Check the total available Comp Offs

Unlike casual leaves, sick leaves, privileged leaves, etc., compensatory leaves are not credited to your leaves account.

Since it is a manual process and is directly equal to the number of extra days you are working, it is a good idea to check the compensatory leave balance and only then apply for it.

2. Speak to your reporting manager in person.

Before dropping the email to seek approval for comp-off, inform the manager personally. It informs them of your absence beforehand and lets them address any concerns they may have regarding it.

Use this opportunity to decide the point of contact in your absence who will handle your share of responsibilities while you are on leave.

3. Draft the perfect compensatory leave application

Now that you have taken care of the nitty-gritty, it is time to draft the compensatory leave application. Here are some things you must recollect before you draft your letter:

  • Start and end date of your leaves
  • Details of days against which you are applying for the comp off
  • Outline of who will manage work in your absence
Here are some samples to help you get started.
