Job Summary:
The Veterinary Technician will assist veterinarians in providing healthcare and managing the well-being of dairy cattle. This role involves supporting routine health assessments, medical treatments, and monitoring herd health to ensure optimal production and welfare of the animals.
Key Responsibilities:
Animal Health Monitoring:
· Assist in routine health checks and physical examinations of dairy cattle.
· Monitor cattle for signs of illness, injury, or distress and report to the veterinarian.
· Record animal health data, such as body temperature, weight, and overall condition.
Medical Procedures:
· Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian.
· Assist in reproductive health management, including artificial insemination (if trained) and pregnancy checks.
· Support during surgeries or other medical procedures.
· Handle emergency care situations such as calving complications or injuries.
Herd Health Management:
· Help with the development and implementation of herd health plans.
· Support in maintaining a vaccination and deworming schedule for the herd.
· Assist in managing disease prevention, biosecurity protocols, and parasite control.
· Perform basic diagnostic tests such as blood draws and lab sample collection.
Nutritional and Environmental Care:
· Monitor feed and water intake, ensuring cattle are receiving proper nutrition.
· Work with the farm team to maintain a clean, safe, and healthy environment for the animals.
Record Keeping:
· Keep accurate and up-to-date health records for all dairy cattle.
· Assist in tracking breeding, vaccination schedules, and treatment histories.
· Input data into farm management software as required.
Collaboration and Communication:
· Work closely with veterinarians, farm manager, and other farm staff to ensure animal health and productivity.
· Communicate any health concerns or recommendations to the appropriate team members.
· Assist in training farm staff on basic animal care and health practices.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelors in Animal Husbandry / Science / Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology or related field
Licensing/Certification: Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) preferred but not required, depending on location.
Experience: Previous experience in large animal care or dairy cattle preferred.
Skills:
· Knowledge of cattle health and husbandry practices.
· Ability to handle and restrain large animals safely.
· Proficiency in administering medications and performing minor medical procedures.
· Strong communication and record-keeping skills.
Working Conditions:
· Work is primarily outdoors, often in all weather conditions.
· Physical demands include lifting, walking long distances, and handling large animals.
· Work hours may include nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on the needs of the farm.
