Job Brief
The role is responsible for conducting Eddy Current Testing (ECT) on stainless steel and nickel alloy seamless pipes and tubes to detect surface and near-surface defects such as cracks, pits, laps, and inclusions. The ECT Inspector operates and monitors online (automatic, in-line) inspection systems to ensure compliance with company quality standards, customer specifications, and international codes including ASTM, ASME, EN, and Aramco requirements. The position requires a valid NDT Level II (ECT) certification, strong technical expertise in eddy current techniques, and accurate interpretation of inspection results.
Key Responsibilities
Planning & Preparation for ECT Inspection
Review work orders, ITP (Inspection & Test Plan), and customer specifications prior to ECT inspections.
Select appropriate ECT procedures in accordance with ASME, ASTM, EN, and Aramco standards based on product type and customer requirements.
Ensure availability of calibrated ECT equipment, reference blocks, and required accessories.
Equipment Setup & Calibration
Set up and calibrate automatic ECT machines before production activities.
Use reference standards with artificial defects such as notches and drilled holes for calibration.
Verify frequency, sensitivity, and probe performance to ensure reliable inspection results.
Online ECT Inspections
Operate and monitor automated ECT systems for 100% in-line inspection of pipes and tubes.
Detect and evaluate surface and near-surface discontinuities in real time.
Verify accuracy of rejection systems and alarm mechanisms.
Adjust scanning parameters when abnormal signals are observed.
Interpretation & Evaluation
Interpret ECT signals and differentiate between actual defects and noise.
Compare inspection results with acceptance criteria as per ASTM A999/A1016, ASTM E309/E426, EN 10246, and Aramco SAES standards.
Classify defects as acceptable, repairable, or rejectable.
Documentation & Traceability
Prepare ECT inspection reports with traceability to heat numbers, product identification, and inspection results, when required.
Maintain electronic and hardcopy inspection records to support audits.
Upload inspection results into MES systems to ensure full traceability.
Ensure rejected products are properly identified and linked to NCR documentation.
Nonconformance & Corrective Action
Segregate and clearly identify nonconforming products.
Issue NCRs (Non-Conformance Reports) and support root cause analysis activities.
Assist QA/QC and suppliers in corrective and preventive action (CAPA) implementation.
HSE Compliance
Ensure compliance with HSE rules and proper use of PPE during ECT operations.
Follow safe lifting and handling procedures for billets, tubes, and inspection equipment.
Immediately report unsafe acts, near misses, or equipment failures.
Coordination & Support
Support the Foreman by providing consolidated inspection records for audits.
Coordinate with customer representatives or third-party inspectors during witness or hold points.
Adjust scanning parameters during production when required.
Generate automated inspection reports from the ECT system and validate data accuracy.
Requirements & Skills
Minimum Diploma in Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or a related field.
3–5 years of Eddy Current Testing experience in steel or alloy industries.
Direct experience with online automatic ECT systems is preferred.
Valid NDT Level II ECT certification (ASNT, ISO 9712, or equivalent).
Additional NDT certifications such as UT are an advantage.
Strong knowledge of eddy current testing principles, probe types, defect characterization, and calibration techniques.
Familiarity with ASME Section V, ASTM A999/A1016, ASTM E309/E426, EN 10246, and Aramco SAMSS standards.
Hands-on experience with encircling coils and automated ECT systems.
Basic understanding of Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2015).
Good written and verbal communication skills in English.
Proficiency in MS Office and MES software.
High attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and commitment to quality.
