Job Brief
The role focuses on conducting ultrasonic testing (UT) on stainless steel and nickel alloy seamless pipes and tubes to detect internal defects such as cracks, laminations, inclusions, and porosity. The UT Inspector is responsible for both online (automatic, production process) and offline (manual, end-of-product) inspections, including equipment setup, calibration, inspection execution, result interpretation, and documentation. The position requires a valid NDT Level II (UT) certification, knowledge of international standards, and the ability to support internal and external audits.
Key Responsibilities
Planning & Preparation for UT Inspection
Review work orders, ITP (Inspection & Test Plan), and customer specifications prior to UT inspections.
Select appropriate UT procedures in line with ASME, ASTM, EN, and Aramco requirements based on product type and customer specifications.
Ensure availability of calibrated UT equipment, reference blocks, and required accessories.
Equipment Setup & Calibration
Set up UT equipment including digital flaw detectors, thickness gauges, and automated UT systems.
Perform calibration using international standard or customer-specified reference blocks.
Verify sensitivity, range, and DAC/TCG curves before inspection.
Re-verify calibration at defined intervals during inspection activities.
Online UT Inspections
Operate and monitor automated UT systems integrated into the production line.
Ensure real-time detection of defects such as cracks, laminations, inclusions, and porosity.
Adjust scanning parameters during production when required.
Generate automated reports from the UT system and validate data accuracy.
Offline UT Inspections
Conduct manual UT inspections using portable flaw detectors for sampling, re-validation, or special testing.
Apply appropriate scanning techniques including longitudinal wave, shear wave, angle beam, and immersion methods.
Perform follow-up inspections for dead zones identified during online UT inspections.
Document inspection results and provide additional analysis for customer review when required.
Interpretation & Evaluation
Interpret UT signals to differentiate between relevant defects and non-relevant indications.
Compare inspection results with acceptance criteria as per ASTM A999/A1016, ASTM E213, EN 10246, and Aramco SAES requirements.
Classify defects as acceptable, repairable, or rejectable.
Documentation & Traceability
Prepare UT inspection reports with traceability to heat numbers, product identification, and inspection results, when required.
Maintain electronic and hard copy records to support audits.
Upload inspection results into MES systems to ensure full traceability.
Ensure rejected products are properly identified and linked to NCR documentation.
Nonconformance & Corrective Action
Segregate and clearly identify nonconforming products.
Raise NCRs (Non-Conformance Reports) and support root cause analysis.
Assist QA/QC and suppliers with corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
HSE Compliance
Ensure compliance with HSE requirements and proper use of PPE during UT activities.
Follow safe lifting and handling practices for billets, tubes, and UT equipment.
Immediately report unsafe acts, near misses, or equipment failures.
Coordination & Support
Support the Foreman by providing consolidated inspection records for audits.
Coordinate with customer representatives or third-party inspectors during witness or hold points.
Adjust scanning parameters during production as required.
Generate automated UT reports and verify data accuracy.
Requirements & Skills
Minimum Diploma in Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or a related field.
3–5 years of ultrasonic testing experience in steel or alloy industries.
Hands-on experience with both online (automated UT systems) and offline (manual UT inspections) is preferred.
Valid NDT Level II UT certification (ASNT, ISO 9712, or equivalent).
Additional NDT certifications such as ECT are an advantage.
Strong knowledge of ultrasonic testing principles, defect characterization, and calibration techniques.
Familiarity with ASME Section V, ASTM A999/A1016, ASTM E213, EN 10246, and Aramco SAMSS standards.
Proficiency in digital flaw detectors, thickness gauges, and automated UT equipment.
Ability to interpret complex UT signals and prepare accurate inspection reports.
Strong understanding of Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2015).
Good written and verbal communication skills in English.
Proficient in MS Office and MES software.
High attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and commitment to quality.
